Race preparation
This include driving the 9 or so hours up to Nairn, registering and scooting along to transition in excitement! When we arrived we found it would be at least an hour until my hire bike was ready (they were still in lorries) so we took our time chomping down some lunch and taking in the surroundings. What particularly stood out to me was the lack of any visible castle - but all would be revealed tomorrow...
Setting up in transition we quickly realised that we only really wanted to leave the bikes, and even those we didn't leave with full pressure tyres due to the expected large temperature drop overnight. I finally managed to procure my bike from Wheels - it looked pretty decent and not too different to my own cross bike. The guys kindly whacked on my SPD-SL pedals and Specialized saddle and lowered the seat post right down. Whether they just do this for all women I don't know (as they didn't do it for the shorter guy in the queue in front of me) but we then had to spend a few minutes putting it back up a good four inches so I'd be race ready.
Next stop - hotel. We carefully timed how long it would take to get back to transition in the morning. This enabled us to allow enough time to do the tyres and drop our belongings.
Day 1
05:00 marked the start of the day. Next came the breakfast tray (we were far too early for normal breakfast) which had been kindly left for us by staff at the Cluny Bank Hotel. They'd even had the forethought to put the milk in a flask so it would survive the night. Unfortunately not so with the natural yoghurt which was bubbling by the time I got to it. Strange, I thought, taking a mouthful - ugh! Least pleasant end to breakfast ever!
Day 2
Started in a very anti-climatic way - a large queue to leave transition!
