Last Minute Triathlon (Southwell) 2015

September 20th 2015

400 m pool swim, 18 km bike, 4.5 km run

Goodbye 2015 season! And with the best weather conditions so far. Low winds, a little bit of sun and around 15 degrees.

The swim was a rather busy affair - with six people in my lane when I got in. This made for a terrible swim as I was significantly faster than a few in my lane and therefore got held up. Someone also managed to punch my wrist at one point, knocking my watch right up my arm which was incredibly painful and necessitated a stop at an end to put it right. My lane also happened to be almost the furthest from the swim exit...

A grassy transition later, I was onto the bike. The course profile looked mostly downhill on the way out and fairly uphill on the way back. I was therefore surprised to find myself really struggling on the way out. The downhills there were did not create much free speed and were followed by uphills. Once onto the flat it was hard going - watching people speed past the other way wasn't helping either. As I reached the roundabout I was glad to get lucky with the traffic and the lights, and even better, realised there was a slight tailwind on the way back - no wonder the way out had felt so grim. I soon found myself fairly comfortably ticking along on the TT bars, overtaking a few people when I got back to the lumpy section and feeling please I hadn't been overtaken.

Transition to the run was fairly smooth and I started off up hill. I was very panty and bike-legged at this point so was relieved to get to the top and start finding a rhythm on the flat. This was soon interrupted by having to pause for a couple of extremely large tractors to come by, before getting back into the swing of it and jogging to the turn point and down the hill. The second lap was much better, steady and uninterrupted. The run was decidedly short of 5k, but I was pleased to see the finish loom around the corner.

A well organised race from OSB events.

For the first time ever I had company from my fiancé for this race. On three weeks training he put in a fabulous time - hopefully I can persuade him to do another!
