Rat Race Survival of the Fittest 2019
October 5th 2019
"10km" obstacle race
Only Hannah would persuade people to do a mad run for her birthday! Although I'll admit I didn't take much persuading - 10km of obstacles sounded pretty fun, I hadn't done one of these for a long time either.
Remembering from last time to wear old clothes and shoes, I turned up at the familiar Holme Pierrepoint, excited and wondering what was in store! The first wave went off in a mad rush - we were all in wave 3 however, which was suitably less hurried. Typically before too long we'd been straight into waist deep water and some undulating mud hills (trickier to get up than down), and the obstacles came thick and fast from there.
Personal favourites included the space hoppers, swim sections and climbing to jumps. I was perhaps less keen on the kayaking as I found the kayaks very difficult to carry! The monkey bars also aren't my best forte - a bit embarrassing at best.... The (12km, not 10km!) run ended in a super-tall slide, where I took the (literal) plunge and decided to go face first. Incredibly exhilarating until I grated my hands on the gravel accumulating at the bottom...
This was a really fun event to do with friends, clearly not one for a PB though! Apparently it was the last ever version of Rat Race's Survival of the Fittest. No idea why but I guess they'll be bringing out something bigger and better!
Next time: trail shoes!!
