400m swim, 24k bike, 5.3k run

Last race of my 2016! And what a long but enjoyable course... Not scenic by any means, but well marshalled, nicely undulating and fantastic weather conditions (no wind, sun but plenty of shade on the run, cool).

November 17th 2018 5 km run Feeling pretty heavy with baby and added-fat weight (15kg! - see below for me at my most whale-like the day before giving birth) I shuffled my way up what felt like a huge hill to the start of the course, with a few diversions where I failed to read google maps. Arriving just on time, I set off and watched what seemed like a stream of runners speed off without me. The course was not particularly friendly to my condition, being hilly and wholly tarmac. It was three very dull laps, and the bowl-like shape of the park meant I could see exactly how far off the leaders were! I was relieved to finish (a nice uphill end), getting a fair bit of pain in my pelvis by the end of it, and very glad not to be lapped (it was a close call). Not a course I would recommend to be honest but everyone seemed friendly enough. There were a few stares at the fat lady running but I am used to these by now.... Brunch however, was great! Thames Swim Marathon 2021

August 15th 2021 8.8 km river (assisted swim) This was meant to be a 14km swim but got shortened to "10km" thanks to Henley Royal Regatta clashing. A shame as I think I could have managed the 14km. First swim I've done of this length, with a couple of hops out of the water at feed stations / locks. The jelly babies really perked me up, especially after the first 4k stint. Wasn't expecting the finish so soon, not sure how they made 10km out of this..... Took it very leisurely and enjoyed it, felt very safe despite lots of craft. Marlow Half Marathon 2019

November 3rd 2019 Half Marathon Possibly my last race of the season - I entered this race fairly spontaneously realising it was just 10 minutes away from my aunt's house, where I happened to be staying this weekend. Similar to last weekend, Friday and Saturday had produced very gnarly weather - incredibly strong winds combined with a bit of rain. However, Sunday yet again came around as a beautiful day for racing - circa 10 degrees, no wind and sunny intervals. Perfect! I started in the 1:30 to 1:50 pen, not knowing what to expect but noting that the only pacer I could see (in the whole race) was a 1:40 guy, who soon shot off at the start. With that target gone, I settled into a nice rhythm to climb up the first long hill. A few undulations followed, with steeper downhills than up, which were fairly agonising on my knee.
